Open Camera: The Best DSLR-Like Camera App for Your Phone

One of the main things that makes an Android device worth buying is how good its camera is. Even though Android cameras and phones can’t always take great pictures or record HD videos, you can always count on your Android device to capture a special moment with high quality photos that don’t take up too much space. When combined with a good camera sensor, most high-end mobile boards come with image processing chips that can do great work.

Similarly to other peripheral devices, Android uses a Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) to hide the differences between camera sensors and give app writers a standard way to write code.

So, complicated image processing algorithms are kept from the third-party developer. Usually, these algorithms are unique to the vendor and can’t be changed. It’s also possible for a cheap device to have the same camera sensor as a high-end device but not even close to the same image quality because of software limits put in place by the manufacturers (for marketing reasons).

Even with the problems listed above, the Camera HAL lets you set up most camera sensors, even the ones on cheap phones. A good camera app lets you fully set up features like White Balance, Exposure, ISO mode, Face Detection, and ISO mode. Users can now change settings and add effects by hand to make their photos and videos look better. However, some devices’ stock Camera Apps don’t make it easy to change most of these settings. People who want to use them must first download a separate app.

Meet OpenCamera, a unique third-party camera app for Android that has been in the works since 2013. It is unique because it is Open Source, you can get it for free, and it doesn’t have any ads. It also supports almost all of the features that the Camera HAL makes available to the Android Application Framework, as well as some cool professional features. Even though the user interface isn’t very nice, it’s very easy to take pictures and record videos:

Things that Open Camera Can Do

For Image:

  • Depending on the monitor, there are different ways to focus: The focus settings are Auto, Manual, Macro, Continuous Picture, Infinity, and Locked.
  • Choose the ISO setting that works with your sensor.
  • Use effects for White Balance, Color, and Scene Mode
  • Toggle on/off Detecting faces
  • Burst mode with a pause that can be set
  • Automatically leveling pictures

With this feature, pictures are always level, so you don’t have to use a photo editor to fix them later. It takes a lot of memory, so machines with limited memory can’t use it. Also, images that are made might be smaller because the process cuts down the source image to make sure it is level.

  • Support for camera flash
  • Use the voice word “cheese” or make a noise to take pictures.
  • Help for exposure lock and pay
  • To save pictures, choose JPEG Quality.
  • Choose where to save images and add your own custom prefixes and suffixes to filenames
  • You can add custom text, position coordinates, and a date and time stamp to photos.
  • It can take selfies and supports “screen flash” and front camera mirroring.

Support for High Dynamic Range (HDR). This feature handles a lot of different brightness levels by mixing three images with different exposures into one picture that shows all the colors in the scene. This process could take a while because OpenCamera doesn’t use a filter but instead a complex HDR technique. In addition, pictures that are used for HDR processing can be saved separately on the device.

Support for Dynamic Range Optimization (DRO). A function called DRO is like HDR. In contrast to HDR, it only needs to take one picture to process, which makes it faster in general. All versions of the Android Camera API and Android versions 5.x and up can use DRO.

Help with Automatic Exposure Bracketing (AEB). The AEB takes several pictures with various exposure settings and stores them so that they can be handled later in different HDR programs. You can change how many pictures are taken.

The camera has a timer that can be set to voice countdown and an auto-repeat mode that lets you set the delay.

For Video:

  • Recording video, including HD video recording
  • It’s possible to record sound from a source other than the one set up in the device’s software. Additionally, Open Camera works with a number of external mics.
  • Set up the audio channels (some devices may not be supported).
  • Place and date should be saved as movie subtitles (.SRT format).
  • Set the maximum file size and length of the movie.

Generally:

  • You can change how the volume keys work.
  • GU display that can be set up for left- or right-handed people
  • You can zoom in and out with a single touch or multiple touches.
  • Preview choice that works upside down for attachable lenses
  • Grids and crop guides can be added on top of the picture preview.
  • Both pictures and videos can be geotagged. That includes compass direction for shots as well.

Support for the Camera API on Android:

  • Focusing distance by hand
  • Handle ISO
  • Exposure Time by Hand
  • Set the white balance temperature by hand
  • Images in RAW (DNG) format

Some features may not work on some smartphones with any third-party camera app. As an example, some Sony devices can only take pictures up to 5 megapixels because Sony limits the image sizes that third-party apps can use. Also, 4K UHD video might not be available on many high-end devices because the seller only adds this feature through a special Camera App that comes with the device’s stock firmware.

Active work is going on with Open Camera like Dslr, and new features are being added all the time. To find out about the newest changes and news, visit the project’s Sourceforge page. Finally, if you like the app, you can buy the paid donation version to support the creator.
