5G Smartphones: Fix 4G Network Switching Problems and Have Stable Internet

The common complaints from 5G users are your 5G phone continuously switching back to 4G, jumping between the two networks or a choppy connection despite good signal bars. Good news: Itโ€™s almost never a hardware defect. The problem is usually network settings, carrier setup or how your phone manages the transition between towers. Hereโ€™s how to locate and fix it.

Why does my phone continually dropping from 4G to 5G?

It is useful to grasp what is truly going on before we dive into solutions.

Poor or spotty 5G coverage

Many 5G networks (mid-band and especially mmWave) do not go as far as 4G LTE. If the 5G signal is weak then your phone will automatically switch over to 4G and switch back again when the signal is better.

Network handoff logic

Phones are always talking to towers in the background, trying to get the best connection. If the handoff algorithms are not optimized, rapid, unnecessary switching (commonly referred to as โ€œping-pongingโ€) may occur.

Congestion/throttling on the carrier side

Carriers might move devices to 4G to balance network traffic during peak hours.

Old carrier settings / firmware

Your phone can be getting mixed signals from towers if your carrier settings are not up to date.

Battery saver / network settings

Some phones default to 4G to save power, unless you select 5G.

Step 1: Check your real 5G coverage

Before changing any settings, check if 5G is actually dependably available where you are. Some carriers allow you to view their coverage map on the web, or you can check signal strength in your phoneโ€™s field test mode. This is planned behavior, not a glitch, if you are on the edge of a 5G cell and there is no setting that will fix this totally.

Step 2: Update Carrier Settings & Software

This solves the problem for a large number of users.

iPhone

Settings > General > About

If there is an update, youโ€™ll be prompted to install the carrier settings.

Then go to:

Settings > General > Software Update.

Android

Settings > System > System Update

Settings > Network & Internet > SIM/Carrier settings update (varies by manufacturer)

Your phone learns which network bands and priority to use from carrier profiles, but out-of-date ones are a frequent source of erratic switching.

Step 3: Enforce a Network Mode Unique

There is a specific network mode that can be forced to halt the continual switching.

Android

Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred network type

Go to 5G/4G/3G Auto or, if the switching is bad, just lock to 4G/LTE just for a while to see if it is stable, then turn 5G back on.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data.

Choose 5G Auto, 5G On, or LTE.

5G Auto offers a nice combination of speed and battery life, while 5G On is more aggressive about staying on 5G.

If itโ€™s a switching problem, 5G On (not Auto) can assist with undesired drops on iPhone rather commonly.

Step 4: Restore Network Settings

It will remove your remembered network settings, VPN settings and Wi-Fi passwords, but wonโ€™t erase your data or apps.

iPhone

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings

Android

Settings > System > Reset options > Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth.

This is one of the most efficient cures for persistent switching due to defective network profiles.

Step 5: Replace or Re-seat Your SIM Card

Loose, broken or old SIMs can cause intermittent network drops that seem like 4G/5G switching.

Take the SIM out and look for any damage. Wipe the contacts and put it back in. If you are still using a few years old SIM, ask your carrier for a SIM swap as older SIMs might not support 5G signaling completely.

Step 6 โ€“ Search for Interference and Case Problems

Phone cases that are thick, particularly those with metal pieces or magnetic attachments, can cause your phone to hop between network bands more aggressively.

See whether the switching behavior improves if you try removing the case for a while.

Step 7: Disable VoLTE/VoWiFi Conflicts (If Required)

In some regions, 5G standalone networks donโ€™t get along with VoLTE (Voice over LTE) or Wi-Fi Calling settings.

Try turning off VoLTE and then back on again.

Android

Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > VoLTE.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > Voice & Data

Step 8: Call Your Carrier

If the switching continues after all of the above, the problem could be on the network side, such as tower configuration, backhaul congestion, or a known flaw in your carrierโ€™s 5G deployment.

Carriers can check tower logs, confirm outages or do fixes on the network side as needed.

In Summary

If you see a lot of 4G/5G switching, it’s probably your phone looking for the best signal it can find. But it can lead to over-switching when reception is patchy or settings are wrong.

Most customers can fix the issue by following the methods mentioned above, from software updates to manually selecting the optimal network mode. If none of these solutions work, then most likely itโ€™s an issue with your carrierโ€™s network and not your device.
